What is the difference between kraft paper and normal paper? When should you use Kraft paper?

Kraft paper is stronger than normal paper without adding weight, keeping shipping costs down. Kraft paper can be made using several types of wood that traditional paper leaves out, like bamboo. Normal paper can’t withhold the stress of shifting during shipping, where kraft paper is ideal for cushioning, void-fill and product separation.

Kraft paper is also 100% curbside recyclable, making it the ideal choice for those looking for a sustainable packaging solution. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), only 13.6% of plastics were recycled in the US in 2018. In contrast, the overall recycling rate for paper and paperboard packaging was 80.9% in that same year. Environmental activists and consumers are taking note of these trends and forward-thinking e-commerce brands are adding sustainable packaging to their list of company goals.

What can be used as box filler?

When selecting the right box filler solution, shippers need to consider several factors. DIM weight, product fragility, cost and size of void-fill are important considerations. Options include bubble wrap, packing peanuts, paper and inflatable pillows. On top of freight costs and product protection, sustainability has quickly become one of the top areas of focus for packaging experts. Paper has a reputation of being welcomed by consumers and is easily recyclable.

Sealed Air continues to put sustainability on the top of their priority list, and their kraft paper solutions are the ideal choice for manufacturers looking to go green while saving on their bottom line.

When should I use paper for void-fill or protective packaging?

Millennium Packaging clients are often turning to paper void-fill and protection packaging when they are attempting to reach their own sustainability goals and their end consumers’ increasing drive for an easy-to-recycle package. In fact, paper is one of Millennium’s fastest growing product segments! When compared to other rigid materials, paper can offer increased flexibility without increased cost.

Low-volume packers and ship-from-store operators might consider paper as a void-fill solution if their product doesn’t need excessive protection during transit. Easy-to-use kraft Sealed Air FasFil Mini paper packs are available in 30 or 40 pound packs, and can be used with or without a FasFil M dispenser.

For those with heavier products, products with sharp edges or fragile surfaces, Custom Wrap™ or Kushion Kraft® by Sealed Air are ideal protective packaging materials. These materials are designed to withstand continued impact, ensuring products arrive damage free.
